IOM strengthens the capacities of the migrants through the delivery of language classes
Based on the suggestion from the Ministry of the Interior that humanitarian partners provide informal education to the migrants at the Slavonski Brod reception transit centre, IOM in coordination with the Croatian Red Cross and Save the Children, organized language courses to 75 migrants at the WRTC.
Courses were organized based on migrants' native speaking language (Kurdish, Arabic and Farsi) in 8 groups. IOM took the lead with Farsi and Arabic English courses, as well as the Croatian language course. IOM worked closely with Save the Children and NCM. Workshops were well organized and proved to be a great success. The needs of the migrants, including the fact that some of them were illiterate were taken into account when organizing the courses.
Future courses will include hygiene classes, initial cultural orientation, and interpretation assistance at schools for migrant children in subjects such as math, art and geography.
