Group of 50 Syrian Refugees Arrives in Zagreb through Croatia’s Resettlement II Programme
Zagreb – 50 Syrian refugees landed safely in Zagreb on Wednesday and Thursday (29-30 May) after leaving Turkey as a part of Croatia’s Resettlement II programme.
Based on its decision of 5 October 2017, the Government of the Republic of Croatia has decided to effectively resettle 100 Syrian refugees from Turkey. This is a follow-on action to the already resettled 152 persons in 2017 and 2018.
The refugees who arrived over these two days (25 landed on Wednesday, 25 on Thursday) represent the first group of 100 which will be resettled with the assistance of IOM, the UN Migration Agency, which is supporting the Republic of Croatia’s initiative.
The new arrivals included ten families: 27 adults, 22 children and one infant; 21 males and 29 females.
After being assisted by IOM at the airport, the new arrivals were taken to the Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers in Kutina.
IOM has supported the families and the government of the Republic of Croatia with pre-departure support in Turkey as well as with their travel arrangements.
The protection and humanitarian character of this project continues to ensure the availability of a much needed safe and legal channel for the most vulnerable refugees.
